Dental Implants

An overview

Dental implants are surgically embedded in the jawbone and consist of two parts – a titanium post implanted into the jawbone below the gum line and a tooth replacement attached to the top of the post.

Once the post is in place, bone, and gum tissue heals around it, making it a durable substitute for the natural tooth root. After the posts have healed appropriately, tooth restorations such as porcelain crowns, bridges, or dentures may be mounted to them. Because the post is rooted in the bone cells of your jaw, it has the strength of a real tooth and Dr Moksha creates your tooth with all aesthetic considerations, it is virtually indistinguishable from your natural teeth.

The dental implants procedure typically involves three steps: implantation, osseointegration (while the jawbone heals), and attachment of restorations. The treatment is made over months.
In order to be considered for dental implants, you must have enough healthy bone mass in your jaw to support an implant post.

Dental Implants vs. Fixed bridges and Removable dentures

  • Not only does a dental implant fill unsightly gaps in a smile, they are also important to deter bone loss which will occur when a tooth is lost. The titanium post fuses with the bone, preventing it from dissolving
  • Fixed bridges and removable dentures are not the perfect solution to missing teeth and often bring with them a number of problems. They only provide 10 to 15 percent of the chewing power of natural teeth, making it more difficult to enjoy many foods
  • When teeth are lost, the bone which held the roots of the teeth starts to dissolve. Removable dentures — which use this bone for support — may slip or cause sores on the gums because the dentures will not be stable
  • Fixed bridges often require the preparation of adjacent healthy teeth. Decay, periodontal (gum) disease and other factors often doom fixed bridgework to early failure. For these reasons, fixed bridges and removable dentures usually need to be replaced every seven to 15 years, compared to the average 25-year life span for dental implants

More than just aesthetics

Certain oral conditions need more than an aesthetic treatment. With a surgical application, the workings of the chewing apparatus can be re-established, increasing the patient’s well-being.
